MASSIVE rainfalls in the central Slovak village of Ľubietová resulted in 70 houses and cellars being swamped by flash flooding.

Ľubietová mayor Ján Jančík said that the water came and went unexpectedly on July 31, with the destructive rain lasting no longer that half an hour. However, another heavy rain came the next day shortly after President Rudolf Schuster left the village, following a visit to express his support for the stricken inhabitants.

Jančík estimates that property damages reach "tens of millions of crowns".

Based on the president's decision, Defence Minister Jozef Stank ordered immediate help, sending 30 soldiers to aid locals with cleaning works.
