The Interior Ministry has agreed on financial compensation for Štefan Gonda, a man from Poprad (Prešov Region) who unwittingly flew to Dublin in January with explosives that had been put in his luggage by police during a training exercise, outgoing Interior Minister Robert Kaliňák said on Wednesday, July 7, the TASR newswire reported.
Kaliňák refused to specify what Gonda would receive, but said that both sides were satisfied with the agreement. Gonda said in January that he didn’t want to disclose the exact amount of money he would receive. Gonda boarded a plane travelling from Poprad to the Irish capital on January 2. Police at the airport hid samples of explosives in the luggage of several passengers without their knowledge as part of a training exercise. A 90-gram package of RDX high explosive was left attached to the electrician’s bag and was loaded onto the plane undetected. The 49-year-old man was later arrested in Ireland but subsequently released without charge.
