The Rainbow Pride parade in Bratislava will be held in autumn this year, which will for the first time feature decorated floats and music to accompany the march in support of LGBT rights.
"This is to demonstrate that society is opening up, and what seemed unimaginable four years ago isn't such a problem today," event organiser Romana Schlesinger told the TASR newswire on Wednesday, May 8. The event organisers pointed out that a significant improvement in communications with the city authorities, police as well as in terms of public perception and acceptance has been accomplished. "We've advanced. We managed to pass through the centre of Bratislava safely last year and the mood was relaxed, the march was colourful and people felt good. We'd like to prepare an event for everyone this year again," claimed Schlesinger.
She said that the level of social acceptance of LGBT people in Europe is better than ever before at the moment. "An example of positive changes in Slovakia can be seen in the fact that our government has finally begun to deal with the issue and set up an advisory body to that end. However, this is just the beginning of a long road, and public support is a must in order to manage the inevitable social change."
