THE CITIZENS of Slovak cities Štúrovo and Komárno worked round the clock over the mid-August weekend, successfully protecting their homes from Danube river flood waters, which began to recede on the afternoon of August 17 after nearly inundating Bratislava and Danube basin municipalities the previous week.
Meanwhile, the European Investment Bank said it would offer flood-afflicted Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic and Slovakia up to one billion euros in flood relief loans at low interest and up to 30-year maturities.
The Slovak government has earmarked Sk495 million ($11 million) originally reserved for highway building for repairs to roads damaged by flooding. The first damage estimates have hit Sk1.7 billion ($190 million).
