THE FLOODS in Kežmarok in eastern Slovakia at the end of August destroyed the town’s animal shelter.

“We have been building the shelter for several years and it was one of the best in Slovakia,” Juraj Eliaš, the president of the Slovak Alliance for Animal Protection (Slovenská aliancia ochrancov zvierat) told the TASR newswire. “And in a few minutes, a disastrous torrential wave came and destroyed it.”

Eliaš appealed for help for the rescue centre, asking for funds to buy dog food, construction materials and to rebuild the fence around the shelter, as well as asking people to temporarily take care of an animal or to permanently adopt one.

“If the public wants to help, people and NGOs have prepared collection points for citizens throughout all of Slovakia where they can bring food, collars, leashes, bowls, and muzzles for dogs or cats – all things that can be put into a car,” Eliaš stated.

The Facebook page of the Slovak Alliance of Animal Protection lists the collection points and posts updated information.
