Floods take three lives in Slovakia

SPRING flooding in Slovakia, which has affected 123 towns and villages, has so far claimed three lives.

A four-year-old boy drowned in the Eastern Slovak village of Miľpoš; a 61-year-old man was found drowned in the village of Modra-Kráľová; and a woman drowned in the Hron River yesterday, according to the Pravda daily.

A total of 382 people have been evacuated, while water has flooded 599 houses and 1,741 hectares of land, according to the SME daily.

Jozef Paluš, the head of the fire and rescue squad, said the worst situation yesterday was on a two-kilometer strip of the Morava River in western Slovakia near the village of Kopčany.

Meteorologists forecast that the rain will let up in the coming days.
