A FOOD bank with its headquarters in Banská Bystrica will start helping the needy all over Slovakia. The bank's ambition is to deliver food to the poorest regions of the country, the daily SME reported.
The bank will collect food that retail chains and food producers are unable to sell, but which is still of merchantable quality.
Stanislav Trnovec, of the food bank, claims that this system works all over the world, from Ukraine to the United States, so he believes it will work here too.
Trnovec emphasised that the bank should not create dependence on the system or support people's passivity.
The coordinators are assuming that regional centres will start working in September.
The first Food Banks, which were created to stop food going to waste, emerged in the United States in 1967. After 20 years the Canadian and the US model crossed the ocean and also started in Europe.
