Foreign Affairs Ministry condemns assassination attempt

THE SLOVAK Ministry of Foreign Affairs sharply condemned the attempt to assasinate the President of East Timor José Ramos-Horta and Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao on February 11. The assasination attempt was made by groups of revolting soldiers in the capital, Dili, the ministry wrote in a press release.

Attacks on democratically elected representatives of the country, during which the Nobel Peace Award laureate, President Ramos-Horta was seriously hurt, causes concerns of violence and destabilisation in East Timor, which gained independence in 2002.

The Slovak MFA expressed conviction that the East Timorese government will - with the help of multinational security forces - succeed in keeping peace and stability in this reigon to continue economic and social developments of the country.
