THE PARLIAMENTARY foreign committee has issued a statement condemning the violations of international law by Russia against the territorial integrity and independence of Ukraine on March 13. At the same time it expressed solidarity with the Ukrainian people and government, the TASR newswire reported.
“We support democratic transformation and the European direction of Ukraine, as it reflects the sovereign will of its people,” said František Šebej, chairman of the committee, as quoted by TASR. “It is up to Ukrainians to decide where they want their country to belong.”
Šebej added that the Slovak parliament should observe the situation and convene if necessary.
“We do not know how the situation will evolve, whether [Russian President] Vladimir Putin’s ambitions will end with Crimea, or whether a similar scenario will also involve other areas of Ukraine,” Šebej said, as quoted by TASR.
The committee members, who unanimously endorsed the statement, are advising Ukrainian authorities to continue with their efforts to assure the free and fair presidential and parliamentary elections. They should also continue with constitutional reform, and to investigate and prosecute all acts of violence, as reported by TASR.
