Foreign Minister Kukan most popular presidential candidate

PRESIDENTIAL candidate Eduard Kukan has the best chance of winning the presidential elections scheduled for April 3, the Slovak Radio's Media Research Department said in its recent poll.

Receiving the support of 27.9 percent of those polled, Kukan was ranked first ahead of Movement for a Democratic Slovakia boss Vladimir Mečiar, who collected 22.4 percent of the votes.

The third most popular candidate was Ivan Gašparovič, the head of the non-parliamentary Movement for Democracy, with 15.8 percent support, followed by incumbent President Rudolf Schuster with 15.5 percent.

František Mikloško, the Christian-Democratic Movement candidate, enjoyed the support of 6.7 percent of respondents, followed by former Slovak Ambassador to the United States Martin Bútora with 6.3 percent.

Of the respondents 12.4 percent did not choose any favourite.
