IN THE course of 2014, the Foreign and European Affairs Ministry provided a total of €499,500 in humanitarian aid abroad.
The sum of €110,000 was allocated to aid for Syrian, Palestinian and Kurdish refugees in Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq, the West Bank of Jordan and Gaza Strip, ministry spokesman Peter Stano informed the TASR newswire on December 26.
In May, Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina were hit by the worst flooding on record. The ministry responded by sending €260,000, divided between the two states.
Ukraine has received €114,500 from the ministry so far, with the Kiev Children Neurosurgery City Centre using €10,000 from the sum to procure medical materials. A similar amount was used by Ukrainian Health Ministry to buy special medi-kits for war-torn regions and another €10,000 was spent on food aid. The rest of the money was allocated for rehabilitation stays for former Ukrainian soldiers, protesters, injured soldiers and war orphans.
The Foreign and European Affairs Ministry also provided €15,000 for the World Health Organization in the effort to fight the Ebola epidemics in various regions in northern Africa. The Ebola virus already claimed 7,300 lives, with more than 19,000 people falling ill in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.
