A total of 337,610 foreign tourists visited Slovakia in the first quarter of 2013, equivalent to a 19.9-percent rise on year-on-year basis, the TASR newswire reported on June 19, citing Transport Ministry spokesman Martin Kíňa.
The number of nights that tourists spent in Slovak hotels also went up, by 8.8 percent to 519,239. In addition, the amount of money that travellers spent rose by 6.3 percent year-on-year to €383 million over the first three months of the year.
Tourism in the period posted a surplus – that is, more money came into Slovakia from foreign tourists than went out by way of Slovaks going abroad – of €21.4 million, an increase of 36.3 percent year-on-year.
"It can be assumed that further development of tourism will be secured by a new strategy for the development of the sector to 2020," said Kíňa, adding that the ministry is currently putting the finishing touches to the strategy.
