Slovakia’s surplus in foreign trade stood at €232.8 million in August of this
year, based on preliminary data published by the Slovak Statistics Office (ŠÚ).
Exports in August reached €4.679 billion on a y-o-y drop of 2.4 percent. Imports in the eighth month came down 3.1 percent to €4.446 billion, the SITA newswire quoted the ŠÚ.
Cumulatively for eight months of this year, exports of goods soared 2.3 percent to €42.28 billion. Imports boosted 2.3 percent to €39.088 billion. Slovakia’s trade surplus reached €3.192 billion and was €80.6 million higher than over the same period of last year.
Foreign trade thus continues in 2014 with similarly high surpluses as in previous years. According to analysts, it can be expected this year again that foreign trade will end with a sizeable surplus. Unlike in the previous period, however, imports could be encouraged by reviving domestic demand and so it is questionable whether the full-year surplus would reach similar levels as last year.
