FOREIGNERS are increasingly interested in buying houses in the poorer areas of southern Slovakia, and are seeking both older and new residences for business and recreation, the Pravda daily wrote.
A group of Dutch people bought 10 houses recently in the village of Bulhary in the Lučenec district. Buyers are also increasing in the nearby Veľký Krtíš district, where real estate is among the cheapest in Slovakia. Here foreigners have already bought real estate in five different villages.
One French citizen bought three houses in the village of Chrťany. According to the local mayor, Pavel Hriň, the man intends to start a timber business there.
Apart from French and Dutch nationals, Swiss and British citizens are also buying houses for recreation. According to locals, the foreigners are attracted to Slovak real estate by the low prices, the beautiful surroundings and the proximity of the mountains.
The village of Vinica recently sold an old manor house to a businessman from the Netherlands who plans to turn it into a guesthouse for senior citizens.
