Ivan Šramko, a former governor of the National Bank of Slovakia (NBS), the country’s central bank, has been proposed to become head of the country’s new Council for Budgetary Responsibility by MPs serving on parliament’s committee for finance and budget. The council will have a supervisory role over economic management of the state, the TASR newswire reported.
The chair of the committee, Daniel Duchoň from Smer party said that Šramko meets all the requirements necessary for the post. He must be approved by a constitutional majority in the parliament, 90 MPs.
Šramko said establishment of the Council for Budgetary Responsibility is an important element in the system of public finances.
“Especially because it introduces a systemic approach to the monitoring and assessment of developments in public finances not only from a short-term perspective but also over the long term,” Šramko stated, as quoted by TASR.
The parliamentary committee also recommended appointing two other members of the council, Ľudovít Ódor and Michal Horváth, both economists.
