Police suspect the accident occurred because Tóth went through a red light.

Tóth served as culture minister from June 2005 to April 6, 2006. Prior to that, he had worked as Slovakia's deputy education minister. He was a member of the New Citizen's Alliance (ANO), but left and co-founded Nádej, a party that is competing in the upcoming general elections.

Tóth's party peers, as well as former colleagues, were shocked and distraught at the news. Top state officials have expressed their deepest condolences to his family.
