Former Culture Minister František Tóth died in an accident as his car collided with a train at a level railway crossing in the village of Šelpice on June 13 afternoon.

Trnava police spokeswoman Martina Kredasusova told SITA news wire that Tóth's Škoda Octavia car entered the railway crossing in Šelpice at around 15:00, at which point a passenger train from Trnava to Kúty crashed into the car.

Preliminary reports state that he was alone in his car. Railway police spokesman Jozef Buranský assumes that Tóth probably ignored the red warning signal light at the railway crossing.

Frantisek Toth was Education Ministry state secretary for the New Citizens's Alliance from 2002. In June 2005 he was appointed culture minister. After disputes with Prime Minister Mikuláš Dzurinda he was recalled from his ministerial post on April 5, 2006. He was a member of the recently established Nádej (Hope) party.
