FORMER CULTURE Minister Rudolf Chmel is to return to his old post. The parties of the ruling coalition agreed yesterday that the current minister, František Tóth, should be fired for sending at taxpayer expense 66,000 letters to teachers across the country that the government felt promoted his Nádej party.

According to Prime Minister Mikuláš Dzurinda, Chmel's return to his post will be a "certain moral satisfaction" for the former minister, who was ousted by his former ANO party boss, Pavol Rusko, the SME daily wrote.

Tóth said his recall was politically motivated. He argued that he had prepared several successful projects at the Culture Ministry, including granting free access to cultural establishments to students. The letters he sent to teachers, which cost the Culture Ministry Sk700,000, were to thank teachers that had joined the project, Tóth said.
