A FOUR-member family in Slovakia needs at least €900 per month in order to be able to live a decent life, according to 68 percent of the respondents who took part in a recent survey published by the Milan Šimečka Foundation (NMŠ) on October 18,
The survey, which was conducted by the Focus agency in September, canvassed the views of 1,043 respondents. It was carried out within a project entitled “What to Do About Poverty”, which has been supported by Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway via the Active Civil Engagement and Inclusion programme overseen by the Ekopolis Foundation in cooperation with Children’s Foundation Slovakia and SOCIA - Social Reform Foundation, the TASR newswire reported.
NMŠ asked the respondents what they think a decent income for a four-member family should be. By that it meant an income that would allow the family to live a modest but decent life, according to Laco Oravec of NMŠ, TASR reported.
“We were quite surprised to learn that the level is considerably high,” Oravec said, as quoted by TASR. “We were also surprised that as many as 59 percent of the respondents stated that they help the poor, either directly or via charities, and that some of the respondents even help out as volunteers.”
Nevertheless, more than 40 percent of people remain indifferent, Oravec added. In addition, the survey revealed that as many as 94 percent view illnesses as a problem with respect to their finances.
