Nitra-based Foxconn, a Slovak branch of the Taiwanese producer of LCD television sets, has laid off 473 employees. The mass layoff, which the firm said was prompted by reduced orders, leaves it with 1,300 employees, Foxconn spokesperson Helen Windish said, as reported by the SITA newswire.
"Our aim was to minimise the impact of the unfavourable economic situation on internal staffers,” she said. The reason given for the mass layoff was the critical situation on global and European markets in connection with the LCD television business. "It has affected our strategic partner, and is also mirrored in our business plans," Windish continued. According to her, cutting the number of employees will help the company effectively manage production and keep it competitive in the electro-technical sector. The company said it has prepared some supporting activities for those who are being dismissed. The labour office has set up a mobile site on the premises of the firm.
Foxconn makes LCD television sets for its strategic partner, Sony, the former owner of the Nitra plant.
