THE BIGGEST enemy of information in 2006 in Slovakia is the Transport Ministry, according to the Infočin 2006 (info-act of the year) competition organized in cooperation with the Transparency International Slovensko anti-corruption watchdog.
The Transport Ministry was awarded the title by the Infočin commission for its “steadfast refusal” to publish the contract on the sale in 2000 of a majority stake in the Slovenké Telekomunikácie (Slovak Telekom) telecom monopoly. This is the first time that a state authority has gained this title. In the past, municipal authorities were repeat winners, the Sme daily wrote.
The biggest friend of information in 2006 is the Justice Ministry, which under previous ministers Daniel Lipšic and Lucia Žitňanská launched a project to publish court verdicts on the internet.
