IF INTRODUCED, university tuition fees should bring in over Sk1.1 billion (€28.205m) for the development of higher education, Education Minister Martin Fronc said at Friday's parliamentary session, the TASR news agency reported.
Fronc thinks that approving the fees will be the high point of higher education reform.
According to Fronc's proposal, students will have to pay up to Sk26,000 (€670) per year. The exact amount to be paid to a given institution will be determined by the deans. Moreover, student loans and social scholarships will be made available to supplement the fees.
"In addition, students should pay a share of their university fees because higher education affords greater opportunities for success on the labour market," Fronc added.
The opposition Smer party thinks that Fronc's proposal to change the rules of the game for students mid-way through their university careers is arrogant. Smer says if a student was admitted to a university under the old system, he should be able to continue under that system.
