Mayors of two Slovak towns who were illegally sitting on the supervisory board of private insurance company Komunálna Poisťovňa, will not be punished. The control commission of the Association of Towns and Villages of Slovakia (ZMOS) will investigate Nitra mayor Jozef Dvonč, who also chairs ZMOS, and Bratislava mayor Milan Ftáčnik, saying they did not violate the statute of the association, the Sme daily reported on July 22.
Both Ftáčnik and Dvonč resigned from the posts after information emerged in the media. They also say they did not know that there was a conflict of interest.
“This has to be solved by the specific town council,” said chair of the commission and mayor of Krompachy, Spišská Nová Ves district, Iveta Rušinová, as quoted by Sme. “We cannot interfere with the competences of mayors.”
Both officials could be punished by city representatives by having their salaries withdrawn for six months.
Another member of the committee, Vladislav Šuster, said he believes neither Dvonč nor Ftáčnik were violating the rules deliberately. He added that there are too many laws concerning mayors of towns and villages, so it is possible that they really did not realise they were breaching the rules, as reported by Sme.
Sme reported about the posts of Ftáčnik and Dvonč in Komunálna Poisťovňa in its July 18 and 19 issues.
