While the German shoemaker Gabor is preparing to fire 300 people, or a third of its staff, at its Austrian Spital/Drau factory this year, Gabor’s two Slovak facilities are scheduled to take on another 220 people and increase production by 30 per cent.
The increases, at Gabor’s sites in Bánovce nad Bebravou and Liptovský Mikuláš, are linked to lower labour costs in Slovakia, and have been under preparation since 2001.
