The natural-gas transport networks of Slovakia and Poland are set to be interconnected as part of an intergovernmental agreement that was approved by the Slovak cabinet at its regular meeting October 23.
Slovakia and Poland will attempt to obtain the status of a ‘project of common interest’ for the venture in order to receive co-funding from the EU’s facility Connecting Europe and the new Financial Framework for 2014-20, said Economy Ministry officials. The project will be carried out by Eustream from Slovakia and Operator Gazociagow Przesylowych GAZ-SYSTEM S. A. from Poland, the TASR newswire wrote.
The agreement also touches on activities required to implement the project and establishes a working group to elaborate specific forms of cooperation. The working group composed of Slovak and Polish representatives will establish mechanisms of cooperation, prepare a system for information exchange and monitor preparation and implementation of the project, the SITA newswire wrote. It will be required to present a progress report on the project twice a year. Based on this agreement, Eustream and Gaz-System should inform before the end of this year about a timetable of pre-investment works on the project. Both investors have been working on preparations for the project for at least two years.
The project is part of the planned north-south corridor and diversifies gas pipeline routes, SITA wrote. The north-south corridor presumes connecting the Polish Swinoujscie LNG terminal, with a possible source of supply from the Norwegian coast through a Baltic pipeline, with a planned LNG terminal on the Croatian island of Krk.
