Slovak President Ivan Gašparovič and Defense Minister Ľubomír Galko paid their first visit to Slovak troops deployed on the ISAF operation in Afghanistan on Wednesday, December 15, the TASR newswire reported.
Upon their arrival in Kandahar in the morning, they spent the whole day at KAF military base, where most of the Slovak troops are serving. The ISAF military mission was launched by NATO on December 20, 2001, based on a resolution passed by the UN Security Council. The main purpose of the ISAF mission is to provide assistance to the Afghan Government in creating a secure and stable environment in the country.
Apart from carrying out military operations, ISAF troops are helping to build up the Afghan national army by providing training and equipment to its units. The Slovak contingent operates in line with a mandate approved by parliament that allows up to 348 servicemen to be deployed on the mission.
