Gašparovič: I hope my tip wins

INCUMBENT President Ivan Gašparovič voted in the presidential election at a primary school on Jelačičova Street in Bratislava on Saturday, accompanied by his wife Silvia.

INCUMBENT President Ivan Gašparovič voted in the presidential election at a primary school on Jelačičova Street in Bratislava on Saturday, accompanied by his wife Silvia.

Gašparovič was asked immediately after the vote about how he was feeling when coming to the polls.

"I hope that my tip for who would be best for Slovakia in the next few years will win,” he responded, as quoted by the TASR newswire. “Often it says in the newspapers that the president doesn't have many options to influence developments in the country, but that's not true. He has options even under the current constitution to influence and coordinate foreign policy."

When asked about future plans after his presidential term ends, Gašparovič said that he has been thinking about this for more than a year.

"First, I'll have to put my library in order - where I have a big mess,” he said. “Of course I want to be with my family more often. I've also had some offers already, [from people] with whom I could work together afterwards; not as a party official, but rather to meet and talk about politics, about issues that are or will be [important]."

Gašparovič’s term ends in June.
