AFTER letting the president-elect Andrej Kiska wait for a month, the outgoing President Ivan Gašparovič turned down his request to meet in order to discuss the details of passing over the presidential powers.
The President’s Office refused to make public the letter they sent to Kiska last week. Kiska then published both his original request and the response he received one month later, Sme daily reported.
"In this phase of your preparation I do not see it necessary to meritoriously judge in person political issues about which you continuously inform in the media," Gašparovič wrote to Kiska as quoted by Sme.
In his answer he added that he does not rule out an informal meeting.
The president’s spokesman Marek Trubač said the response only indicates Gašparovič’s unwillingness to speak about politics.
In the past, Gašparovič showed similar reluctance to meet his predecessor Rudolf Schuster, as well as Iveta Radičová when she was elected prime minister in 2010, Sme noted.
