General Prosecutor Dobroslav Trnka will inform parliament’s committee for human rights and ethnic minorities about the progress of the Hedviga Malinová case, which dates back to 2006. Peter Zajac from Most-Híd requested that Trnka be invited to address the committee. According to Zajac, the case of Hedviga Malinová is very important and members of the committee should be informed about the state of the investigation.
Hedviga Malinová was a Hungarian-speaking Slovak student who alleged that she had been physically attacked for speaking Hungarian while using a mobile phone in 2006. However, a police investigation concluded that she had fabricated the story. Zajac criticised Trnka when the committee discussed his Annual Report of the Office General Prosecutor for 2009. At the committee’s meeting at the end of August 2010, Zajac asked Trnka to tell the committee how he would proceed in the Malinová case.
According to Zajac, the Office of the General Prosecutor acted promptly in some cases but was inactive in others, and some scandals were “swept under the carpet”, the SITA newswire quoted him as saying. Trnka invited Zajac to visit him in his office, where he would be able to examine individual case files. However, referring to the case of Hedviga Malinová, he said that he could not make any such commitment and asked Zajac to come to see for himself how the case had been “messed up in a way that cannot be procedurally repaired.”
