THE AMERICAN Commander of the Kandahar Air Base in Afghanistan, Michael Fantini, was awarded Slovakia’s commemorative medal for participation in military operations.
"This award is a symbol of the excellent cooperation between the air base command and the Slovak contingent. Teamwork is essential in Afghanistan, and I'm glad that our soldiers are an integral part of the international team that operates at the base in Kandahar," said Slovakia’s Defence Minister Martin Glváč, as quoted by the TASR newswire.
The medal will be presented to Fantini by Commander of the Slovak contingent in Afghanistan within the ISAF mission Svetozár Bohuš.
The Slovak troops are carrying out their tasks in an exemplary manner, Fantini said.
"The Slovaks can be relied on, and they contribute greatly to the successful performance of the tasks on the air base in Kandahar," TASR quoted Fantini as saying. He especially emphasised their work at the ECP 5 gateway and praised their contribution to the international military police.
The majority of the Slovak troops in Afghanistan are currently based at the Kandahar Air Base.
