SLOVAKIA has declared its willingness to help NATO forces in Afghanistan and join new NATO training mission called Resolute Support providing two rotations of 65 servicemen annually, Defence Minister Martin Glváč announced at the NATO summit in Wales on September 4.
Defence ministers of NATO member states were also evaluating the current situation in Afghanistan.“Slovak soldiers are still in danger ... especially now, during the withdrawal of a large number of servicemen,” Glváč said, as quoted by the TASR newswire.
He added that Slovakia was the ninth biggest contributor of military support in Afghanistan from all NATO member states and 11th from all countries participating in the mission generally.
“It has been very [emotionally] intensive even for Slovakia because it was connected also to our three soldiers, we lost last year,” Glváč said, as quoted by the SITA newswire
Apart from Glváč, also Slovak President Andrej Kiska, Foreign and European Affairs Minister Miroslav Lajčák, and head of the General Staff of Slovak Armed Forces, Milan Maxim, are part of the official delegation to the summit.
