The much-debated Bratislava-Schwechat Pipeline (BSP) which would connect the Schwechat refinery in Vienna to the Druzhba pipeline, which carries Russian oil through Slovakia, will most probably run through Bratislava, after the government on Wednesday, January 9 took into consideration documents submitted by the Economy Ministry.
Both variants preferred by the Economy Ministry include a route through Petržalka, the most populous borough of Bratislava. These alternatives, according to the ministry, "fully respect environmental requirements, as they neither intersect Žitný Ostrov, which is [Central Europe's] largest natural reservoir of potable water, nor any other protected area".
"These routes are commercially feasible ... without any significant effects on the environment. Conversely, the technical and legal aspects bring certain challenges, mainly in the sphere of permit proceedings, as these routes should run through inhabited areas," said the Economy Ministry, as quoted by the TASR newswire.
