The government can significantly restrict public access to information through an amendment to the law on the protection of classified information.
It plans to introduce the concept of "limited information", of which non-governmental organisations are critical.
The Interior Ministry, led by Hlas leader Matúš Šutaj Eštok, argues that there is currently no regulation for such information which, while not classified, is crucial enough for the state that its unrestricted dissemination could disrupt the operations or jeopardise the credibility of state bodies responsible for security, defence, and public order.
Currently, there are four types of classified information inaccessible to the public due to varying degrees of secrecy.
The latest amendment is being prepared as part of the transposition of other European legislation concerning critical infrastructure. Institutions overseeing critical infrastructure, under the National Security Authority, helped draft this bill, writes the Sme daily.
