The government decided at its session in Nové Sady (in the Nitra region) on Wednesday, August 22, to support Slovakia's agricultural sector by providing an additional €70 million to help farmers cope with the consequences of this year's poor harvest.
The assistance should include, for example, direct payments equalling a total of €1.67 million, advantageous loans from the Environmental Fund worth a total of €30 million, state assistance for employing people who find it difficult to find a job reaching €660,000, and a state contribution for excise tax paid on fuel (€10 million).
The TASR newswire quoted the Agriculture Ministry's data as stating that the poor harvest, especially in the case of marketable agriculture commodities, will cause a shortfall in the earnings of farmers, which will make it difficult for them to finance further production. Problems are expected especially when it comes to livestock.
