THE GUNMAN who four months ago shot three people dead and injured two in Hurbanovo, Nitra Region, is likely to be placed in a mental institution, the Sme daily reported on October 17.

Forensic experts came to the conclusion that Milan Juhász’s ability to recognise the character of his actions and to control them was seriously compromised. Juhász reportedly suffers a “paranoid development that could end in permanent mental disorder with delusions”, Sme wrote.

An accumulation of emotional tension has been described as the cause, but although all victims were Roma, police see his personal reaction to their behaviour, rather than racial prejudice, as being the motivation for the crime.

If the police and prosecutor agree to place Juhász in a mental hospital, he would avoid the life sentence that he would likely otherwise face. However Police President Tibor Gašpar commented that the police view the analysis as unclear. For this reason experts will be more thoroughly interrogated, and the police are not ruling out seeking further expert opinions, according to Sme.
