THE SLOVAK Parliament approved Justice Minister Štefan Harabin as a candidate for the post of Constitutional Court justice with the backing of 82 out of 139 MPs voting in a secret ballot on October 20.
Four others were also approved to run for the constitutional court bench on the same day: Miloslava Čutková (nominated by the HZDS party), Milan Ľalík (SNS), and Želmíra Šebová and Mária Trubanová (both Smer).
Peter Brňák (HZDS), Sergej Kohut (SNS), Ľudmila Gajdošíková, Peter Vojčík, Ladislav Orosz and Marianna Mochnáčová (all Smer), and Lajos Mészáros and Alexander Fuchs (both opposition) were approved as candidates on October 19.
Iveta Marušáková, Darina Ličková and Tibor Kubík were chosen as candidates to the court bench under the previous government.
Parliament has yet to select the other two applicants needed to round out the 18 candidates it will propose to the president, who will appoint the judges, the TASR news agency wrote.
A total of 31 people ran for Constitutional Court judge positions, with parliament required to choose 15 candidates during the current session.
The Slovak Constitutional Court is made up of 13 judges who are appointed to a 12-year term by the president on the proposal of parliament. The president also names the chief justice and the deputy chief justice from among the candidates.
