Slovak Justice Minister Štefan Harabin is no longer the only candidate for the post of Supreme Court chairman in the June elections, sources from the Supreme Court confirmed for TASR on Thursday, May 28. A proposal for another candidate - Eva Babiaková, signed by thirty judges - was submitted to the Judicial Council. May 28 was the deadline for the submission of proposals.
Until now, Harabin was the only candidate for this post. The previous vote was scheduled for September 30, 2008 but it was adjourned indefinitely until a review – initiated by the Judicial Council – of financial conduct at the Court.
After the review was completed, the next election was set for May 6, when the council voted down the only candidate, past chief justice Milan Karabin, who did not receive a single vote with 13 members opposing him. Karabin is not allowed to run for re-election in June. Karabin's term in office officially expired on October 7, 2008. The court has been led by deputy chief justice Daniela Švecová in the meantime.
