FARMERS in Slovakia have already harvested more than two-thirds of cereal grains and 92 percent of rapeseed, the Slovak Agricultural and Food Chamber (SPPK) reported on July 30.
“When it comes to rapeseed, the yields reach 3.7 tonnes per hectare, which is far more than last year, when the average yield was slightly below 3 tonnes per hectare,” said Stanislav Nemec, spokesman for the SPPK, as quoted by the TASR newswire.
Regarding the cereal grains – wheat, barley and rye – the yields so far have been 10-15 percent higher than last year. Nonetheless, the showers and rains that have appeared in recent days may affect the rest of the harvest and have a negative effect on the yields, Nemec added.
Slovak farmers this year sowed cereal grains on 564,000 hectares of land, up by 4.4 percent year-on-year. A drop was recorded only with rye, which was sown only on 15,200 hectares, one-third less than last year. Meanwhile, rapeseed was sown on 126,000 hectares, and has fallen to third place among the most cultivated cereal grain in Slovakia below barley. Wheat has remained on top on 380,000 hectares this year, which was 12,000 hectares more than in 2013, TASR wrote.
According to an estimate of the Slovak Statistics Office from late June, the yields of cereal grains in Slovakia should be 15.2 percent higher than last year.
