Havel: Division was a good idea

Czech president Václav Havel, who in 1992 was against the division of Czechoslovakia, said in a New Year's address that the event had in fact been a positive one "no matter how strangely it may have occurred at the time."

"Most nations seem to have to taste full statehood before they can work together well with others. Czechs and Slovaks are closer today than ever before," Havel said.
