20-year-old Kevin Leonardo Guzmán from Colombia came to Žilina to pursue his dreams of studying aviation transport at Žilina University two years ago. However, in October, a burst blood vessel in his brain dramatically altered his plans.
Due to his severe condition resulting from the brain hemorrhage, Guzmán was immobile and unable to speak, writes the My Žilina website. Medical expenses soared, prompting his family to seek help for his return to Colombia for rehabilitation.
Slovaks support Colombian
Numerous people, including those who have faced health struggles themselves, rallied to support the student. Mária Kebísková, a Žilina native, reached out to Guzmán's father, leveraging her connections, and joined others like Daniela Belková, who, along with her family, experienced community support during a similar situation.
The entire Žilina University community also played a significant role. Students and staff shared their plea for help on social media, successfully raising funds for hospital bills. A transparent account was set up, collecting around €30,000 to cover the outstanding debt.
Kevin is back home, fundraising continuing
Despite the financial challenges, there is a glimmer of hope. The young student is now back in Bogota, Colombia, but the fundraising remains open. All contributions will go towards his medical treatment and necessary rehabilitation.
In the words of university spokesperson Adriana Valentovičová, "The university provided free accommodation for Guzmán's parents, and the caretaker was in daily contact with the family." Kevin's return to his studies at the university in Žilina is uncertain, but everyone hopes for his improved health and future educational pursuits.
