The head of the Slovak National Party (SNS), Ján Slota, visited a Roma settlement in Podskalka, near Humenné, on May 28 after his party had a meeting of its expanded board in Humenné, the SITA newswire wrote.
In Podskalka he spoke about his ideas for solution of Roma issues, stating that the Deputy Prime Minister for Human Rights and Ethnic Minorities, Rudolf Chmel, “focuses only on Hungarian issues and banalities but ignores problems of Gypsy citizens”, SITA wrote.
Slota proposed that EU funds meant for Roma should not to be allocated through NGOs but rather through local governments, saying that they know best what problems are faced by Roma communities. He added that a lot of problems would be solved if governments provided jobs for Roma.
The expanded SNS board meeting also discussed the 140th anniversary of the party – celebrations are planned for June 4 – and its petition regarding the use of Slovak as the only official language in Slovakia.
