During the 64th general assembly of the World Health Organisation (WHO), the president of the Slovak League Against Cancer, Eva Siracka, received the Sasakawa Health Prize. She is the first European to receive the award, the SITA newswire reported.
The award was established in 1984 upon the initiative and with funds provided by Mr Ryoichi, Chairman of the Japan Shipbuilding Industry Foundation and President of the Sasakawa Memorial Health Foundation, according to the WHO website.
The Sasakawa Health Prize consists of a statuette and $100,000 to be given to one or more persons, institutions or nongovernmental organizations having accomplished outstanding innovative work in health development, in order to encourage the further development of such work.
Eva Siracka was awarded the prize as an individual candidate for her innovative approach and progress in oncology, a field in which she has been active for 60 years, first as a medical doctor in the research area and then as the League president.
