WITH more Slovaks trying to make healthy eating choices, olive oil consumption in the country made a big jump this year.

Slovaks bought 27 percent more olive oil in the first half of 2007 than they did during the same period last year, according to a new consumer tracking survey from the GfK Slovakia polling agency. Mixed oil and soya oil were also more popular.

"This is linked with the changing trends in the eating habits of Slovaks, and their efforts to have a more healthy lifestyle," GfK Slovakia wrote in a press release.

Up to 86 percent of households bought table oil during the first half of 2007, the survey showed. Sunflower oil and rapeseed oil were the most popular.

Overall, consumption of edible oil in Slovak households dropped moderately in the survey period compared to last year. But it kept the biggest share of sales in the oil and fat market, with 49 percent.
