Health insurers oppose halt to hospital transformation

The Association of Health Insurance Companies (ZZP) has said the government’s decision to halt the transformation of hospitals into joint stock companies will have a negative impact on patients and hospital staff.

At its session on September 19, the cabinet passed a draft revision to the law on health care providers, according to which university hospitals and other health care facilities of particular importance cannot be transformed into joint stock companies. The draft is subject to approval by parliament.

Health Minister Ivan Valentovič said the state is as capable an owner as private companies, but has yet to present anything specific to back up his argument.

Meanwhile, the ZZP welcomed the proposal of Milan Urbáni, an MP from the ĽS-HZDS, who supports the idea of hospitals as joint stock companies. SITA
