Heat consumption in Slovakia should gradually decrease until 2030, according to a draft Strategy for Slovakia's Energy Security, a report from a team of experts coordinated by the Economy Ministry.

If savings measures are taken now, the ministry expects that heat consumption will not grow until 2030. Instead, there would realistically be a 15- to 25-percent drop in heat consumption compared with the 2005 levels, the report said.

The Economy Ministry sees a future in central heat supply systems, despite the fact that many households are currently switching to local heating. Central heat supply systems have several advantages.

“The most important ones include a possibility of environmental-friendly combustion of low quality fuels, and the security of supplies," reads the strategy.

Natural gas will remain the most widely used fuel for heat production. Its share in the central heat supply systems should reach 42.4 percent. Black coal and its
derivatives should be the second most widely used fuel, with a 20.2-percent share.

"The central heat supply systems enable much higher diversity of primary energy resources," states the ministry. “In local heating, natural gas will make up as
much as 84 percent.”

Regional energy strategies for producing and distributing heat and hot water will have to be created in the future, and the ministry will also have to ensure the strategies’ fulfillment is monitored.
