A CIVIC association named Človek v ohrození (People in Peril) launched a new humanitarian assistance effort in December with the name ČloveČiny, a word play meaning something like ‘human acts’ to help needy people in the African nation of Kenya. Since the programme started Slovaks have bought and then donated 132 hens, 44 ecological cooking ovens, 950 tree seedlings, furnishings and equipment for classrooms, several goats and rabbits and one sheep to Kenyans.
Paula Tomanovičová of the association told the SITA newswire that the purchases made by Slovaks at its charity e-shop, ČloveČiny, will be delivered to the needy families and schools in February. “The gifts will help poor Kenyans to improve their family budget, get basic education or protect the environment,” said Tomáš Bokor of the association, adding that he thinks so-called charity buying will continue to flourish beyond Christmastime and especially on other special days such as Valentine’s Day.
People in Peril is a non-profit organisation founded in the Czech Republic in 1999 and its Slovak branch started in 2004. Its first humanitarian effort was assisting residents in war-torn Kosovo and that led to the establishment of a permanent organisation that could react to global humanitarian crises. In addition to its humanitarian aid programme, it has projects providing long-term development aid and education.
