The paper has had a long and distinguished history. It covered the French Revolution in 1789 and the revolutionary years in Europe between 1848 and 1849; after 1848, it also reported about local events in Slovakia.

At first the paper was published twice a week, but from 1880 until 1929 it came out twice a day. The founder and publisher was Bratislava printer Ján Michal Landerer de Füsküt. The editorial staff was usually drawn from literary and scientific experts from in and around Bratislava who were strongly influenced by German and French enlightened rationalism. The editorial team was initially headed by a wine and iron merchant who later became Bratislava Mayor, Karl Gottlieb Windisch, also a renowned historian, cultural activist and writer.
