After several weeks of speculation, MP Alojz Hlina has left the Ordinary People and Independent Personalities (OĽaNO) party. The main reasons cited were the party’s status and the behaviour of its leader Igor Matovič, the TASR newswire reported on October 26.
“Igor Matovič crossed the line I’m willing to accept,” said Hlina, as quoted by TASR, referring to an incident on October 25 when during a parliamentary session Matovič addressed the MP using vulgar language.
Moreover, Hlina disagrees with the fact that OĽaNO was established as a loose grouping of independent personalities that do not have a solid institutional and organisational structure.
Matovič responded that Hlina had been long searching for an appropriate pretext to leave the party and is satisfied now as he seems to have finally found one. Yet, he was rather reluctant to comment on Hlina’s decision, TASR wrote.
Yet, Hlina said his decision is not completely definitive, adding that he is willing to re-evaluate it if Matovič apologises for rebuking him and if OĽaNO takes appropriate measures to introduce a certain democratic minimum in its statutes to be carried out by November 17. He, for example, demands that an executive body of the movement comprising of at least eight members should be defined and set up, that proper application forms for entering the movement and becoming a real party member are introduced and, finally, that the trademark of OĽaNO owned by the party is registered.
