Today the world remembers one of the greatest tragedies in the history of humankind – the Holocaust. January 27 is the day when the largest Nazi extermination camp in Auschwitz was liberated.
However, this is not the only historical event that should be remembered, Dušan Čaplovič, the Deputy Prime Minister for Knowledge Society, European Affairs, Human Rights and Minorities reminded, SITA newswire wrote.
"The tragedy that was brought by two totalitarian ideologies of the 20th century, fascism and Nazism, should always be kept in mind," Čaplovič was quoted as saying.
"We have to talk about the devastation that it caused to human civilization, without prejudice and openly, because the Holocaust is also an inseparable part of our Slovak history."
This Holocaust memorial day is special for Slovakia also because the Israeli Minister of Social Affairs, Diaspora, Society and the Fight against Anti-Semitism Isaac Herzog will officially visit Slovakia today, along with other individuals who were awarded the prestigious Israeli Righteous among the Nations award. Slovakia belongs to countries with highest number of people holding this award for their contribution to saving the lives of Jewish people during the war, SITA wrote.
