English will be a compulsory subject for primary school pupils as of September 2011, as 79 MPs backed an amendment to the Education Act submitted by Education Minister Eugen Jurzyca at a parliamentary session on Tuesday, December 14.
However, it remains unclear at what age English-language classes will become obligatory; Grade 3 (pupils aged 8-9) has been mentioned most often in discussion of the change.
In addition, school reports handed out midway through the school year will be dropped and will henceforth be provided solely on written request, the TASR newswire wrote. In line with the new legislation, school holidays will be announced three years in advance on the ministry’s website.
